ARCH1142 - Workshop4: Model It

This workshop is quite different with the previous model workshop. This one is more focus on the foundamental skills in model making. Although it does not require too much creativity, making neat and brilliant models really takes a lot of time and practises.

In the first week, we are asked to make three simple houses to explore some basic techniques in model making with different materials.

The second week model is the exploration of drafting model which we can develop the details in the second, and the third models. Throughout this process, we are able to develop a final model.

This model is a corner of the Fisher House designed by Louis Kahn. We are focusing on more about the interior design this time.

ARCH1142 - Workshop3: Material modeling workshop

Material modelling is obviously about using different materials to make models. In this workshop, I have explored the usage mountboard, wire, balsa and other materials to express some ideas through different models.

This is the first model I made after reading the given notes.
I create this model based on the word 'Fold' and I try to illustrate different folding or bending movements and shapes with some strips of white mountboard.

The main theme of the second model is 'City, Space, People'. I have walked around the Sydney City and found some inspirations. I have found that there are combinations of old and modern buildings inside the city. I want to express the idea of transformation through this model.

This is the final presentation of workshop3. I have chosen the word 'construction' for the main theme of my model. I am inspired by those heavy construction equipments and try to show the space created by different grids made by balsa wood.

ARCH1142 - Workshop6: Storyboarding interior architectural spaces

This storyboarding workshop is basically based on the idea of sequence. Through different prespectives or angles, we are able to discover the space and the design of a building.

Week 1:
This is an introductory section that we have watched the classic film, Hitchcock's 'Birds', to discover how those professionals showing the correlating sequences in films, and hence take this idea of presentation in the following weeks of the workshop.

Week 2:
We are asked to draw a sequence of images to tell our own story without a word.

Week 3:
Taking the same idea from last week, we are told to draw the Red Centre in UNSW of our own perception of spaces.

Week 4:
This is a final submission after our exploration of the Law Building in UNSW with a sequence of images.

5 Real Time Image Captures Of The Developed Crysis Wars Environment

The overview of the valley.

Angela Merkel's side:
3 storeys main building including reception, office and meeting rooms. The tower in front of it is a security-check centre to protect the German Chancellor.
Bridge:
It is a double decker bridge where Merkel can choose to drive or walk to the meeting place. Those concrete pillars show the powerful tension of the bridge.

Miranda Kerr's side:
A curvy architecture with large amount of glass used shows her role of a model. There is a runway designed for her to practice.
Bridge:
Supportive pillars are made by concrete that produce different curves. It is connected with the mountain which shows Kerr's enthusiastic about the natural environment.

Double decker E-shaped elevators are a part of the bridge. Elevator as this picture shown is going upwards which connects the bridge and the meeting place for two clients.

This is another E-shaped elevator connecting the bridge and the ground floor. This allows two clients to go for a walk after the meeting lunch for further conversation.

4 Real Time Image Captures Showing 2 Draft Crysis Wars Environments

This was my previous draft design of my landform that was inspired by Monument Valley, USA.

After concultation with my tutor, I had recognised that my previous design was not 'powerful' enough. I tried to modify the mountains with little edges, but directly rise from the ocean to show more about the concept of power.

Also, I have added some rocky textures to the landform to illustrate the idea of rough and power.

I have kept the inspiration from Monument Valley which has flat tops on the mountains. So I can build some architectures on the flat plains.

The dinning table is one of the components located on the flat plain.

1 Sketchup Model with Elevators and Dinning Table

A complete Google Sketchup model with all components.

Elevator for clients to ride from the bridge to the meeting place.
It is designed with an "E"-shaped that represents the word 'energy' which shows the distinctive relationship with power.

Another elevation for Angela Merkel which allows her to travel from her office to the bridge.
I have left some spaces for her to communicate with the public.

The dinning table two clients would be using is simple and neat design with geometric shapes.

Mashup

Angela Merkel:
..."Tonight we can really celebrate," said a beaming Merkel, greeted by chants of "Angie! Angie!" from supporters. "(But) there are many problems in our country to be solved."...
Merkel's popularity has been fueled by her consensual approach. She will now lead a narrower coalition with a stronger opposition and a self-confident new partner, but suggested that she will stick to her own style. "My understanding was, and my understanding is, that I want to be the chancellor of all Germans," she told supporters...

Miranda Kerr:
... The 26-year-old recently said that her body is all thanks to the organic diet she follows. (Kerr says she’s mostly vegetarian — with small amount of fish and chicken.) It’s the way I am. It’s the way I’ve always been. I feel the benefits first hand, putting the right fuel in your body so it can function at its optimum. The power of the mind is so strong, every thought you think affects our body on a cellular level, so we need to fill our body with the right thoughts as well...

I love being in nature, being outdoors and amongst nature is so important for our well-being. Climbing trees was my favourite thing to do at home in Gunnedah. Everything from climbing trees, riding motorbikes, riding horses and being a school teacher. We used to play school, my grandma used to babysit a lot of kids from the town and they would come over and I would sit them down and give them homework. "...

Helen Keller:
"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” Helen Keller...

"The public must learn that the blind man is neither genius nor a freak nor an idiot. He has a mind that can be educated, a hand which can be trained, ambitions which it is right for him to strive to realise, and it is the duty of the public to help him make the best of himself so that he can win light through work."...

MashUp:

Angela Merkel Miranda Kerr Helen Keller

There are many problems being in nature, being outdoors and amongst nature which cannot be solved in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. My understanding was, and my understanding is, the power of the mind is so strong, every thought you think man is neither genius nor a freak nor an idiot who still has a mind, a hand and ambitions. It’s the way I am. It’s the way I’ve always been.
